Overview
Baumgartel's newest collection of short stories, The Shadowboxer, features a novella and eight stories. The novella is an unusual take on a crime novel told in first person by an old man, Lew Acres, as he tries to understand what's going on in his life and as he tries to do the right thing. He has lived alone for over ten years, save for the companionship of a small dog. Acres has lengthy interactions with a pair of detectives and a reporter from a local weekly. The suspense rises as he attempts to comprehend the whole, accurate narrative of the murder and how he fits into it. The remaining stories treat a wide variety of characters--from a veteran of World War II in the Pacific to a cubicle worker to a pair of twenty-year-old farm boys--in a wide variety of settings--from the Altai Mountains of Central Asia to the Maine shoreline to the National Lab in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The themes of the stories vary as widely: for example, confronting the past and dealing with its legacy, confronting the possible futures of the earth and the human race, and the personal impact of the American Civil War on both military personnel and civilians. Baumgartel uses different styles in the stories, whether first person or omniscient, to convey the psychological state of a character or to evoke the cultural context of a past era. All the stories move along at a rapid pace and hook the reader by raising questions even in the first few sentences.
